Protesters held a moving musical performance to honour fallen Burmese martyrs on the 34th anniversary of Myanmar's historic 8888 People's Uprising.

The group, composed of both Burmese expats and German nationals, trooped in front of the Burmese embassy in Berlin, Germany and dedicated a song to the revolutionary figures on August 8.

The 8888 Uprising was a series of student-led, pro-democracy protests that happened in Myanmar in 1988, culminating in a nationwide demonstration on August 8 that year.

It ended on September 18, 1988 - after a bloody coup installed the military junta that would rule Myanmar for the next two decades. Thousands are said to have been imprisoned or killed during the uprising.

One of the key figures in the uprising is former State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi who was deposed by the military junta back in February 2021. She is detained for election fraud charges, which she claims were trumped-up.

Myanmar has suffered ongoing unrest and spiralled towards civil war following the removal of the well-liked Suu Kyi.
