Many countries are plagued with bandits, but in India they sometimes take the form of elephants with a serious sweet tooth.

Video captured the moment a mother and baby elephant stopped trucks going along the Sathyamangalam highway through a forest in southern India, to demand payment in the form of sugarcane.

The incident happened in the Sathyamangalam reserve forest in Erode district of Tamil Nadu State.

Jumbos from the forest sometimes come to the highway in search of food and water and this pair are habitual offenders, often stopping trucks to feed their sugar cravings.

After holding up traffic they help themselves to some of the sugar cane being carried by the vehicles.

The scene was recorded by a lorry driver witnessing the sight.
