The weather extremities met at the Gate of The Sahara as snow fell on the sandy dunes of the desert in rare circumstances.

Amateur photographer, Karim Bouchetata was traversing the icy mounds of sand in Ain Sefra, a province in Algeria, and captured this uncommon occurrence on 18 January.

Karim, 37, was able to walk on snow and sand at the same time, creating stunning snow patterns amongst the rippling sand dunes.

A place normally associated with arid landscapes was dazzled with snow as temperatures dropped to -2°C.

This was only the fifth time that snow has been captured on camera in the past 24 years.
