Giant plumes of hot gas could be seen around the Mount Merapi volcano from a resident's house in Indonesia.

Footage shows thick clouds forming around the volcano today, March 10 after it had erupted several times this week.

Multiple eruptions were also recorded a day before causing an avalanche of hot clouds gliding 2km going southeast. Roads were closed for safety making evacuations and travelling in the area more difficult.

Hundreds of residents were evacuated from villages surrounding the volcano.

Center for Disaster Data, Information and Communication at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) head Abdul Muhari said the hot cloud bursts triggered ash rain in several villages in Magelang Regency.

He said: ‘A total of 60 residents from Klaten village and another 193 from Sleman which were very near to the volcano had to be evacuated.’

Authorities have set a 5km danger zone around the volcano while evacuations are ongoing.

Mount Merapi is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has regularly erupted since the 1500s.
