A photographer managed to capture a stunning timelapse of an aurora passing over southern Iceland near Lómagnúpur.

The northern lights were visible in the early hours of Thursday morning (March 31) after a geomagnetic storm from the sun hit Earth, according to the filmer.

"Aurorahunting in Iceland again, seeing northern lights almost every night. [This is an] amazing northern lights geomagnetic storm caught in timelapse video," he told Newsflare. "Filmed in southern Iceland near Lómagnúpur mountain between Kalfafell and Skaftafell.

"The night was dark and aurora was absent until suddenly the anticipated CME coronal mass ejection hit our planet.

"Filmed in timelapse with Canon EOS R6 and Samyang 12mm f/2.8 fisheye lens."
