Residents of Newquay in Cornwall are said to be split between outrage and sympathy after two homeless men pitched tents on the crumbling cliffs of the famous seaside town.

Footage captured on May 20 showed the two tents pitched metres from a well-known luxury home with its own suspension bridge.

The Island house has been rented out for a minimum of £1,830 for a long weekend or mid-week break, according to an online letting agent that used to advertise the property.

One of the homeless men, Desire Cassanbo, has been in Newquay for many years and is on every housing register according to Monique Collins, who works at "The Drop In and Share Centre" helping local homeless people.

Cassanbo said that despite the precarious location of their tents above Towan Beach, they felt safer than in the town centre where abuse can occur.

The boom in short-term holiday accommodation has exacerbated the housing situation with working families being displaced by landlords for the more lucrative returns, according to local residents.
