A horror motorcycle race crash killed one minor and injured seven other people in Thailand.

The event was held at a temporary race track in Trang province from July 2 to 3, but went awry when one of the competitors lost control and smashed into the audience watching from the sidelines.

Footage shows how the driver skidded across the road and barreled right into a cluster of spectators. There appeared to be no barriers installed to protect onlookers near the race track.

Officers said the motorcycle rider was severely injured and fell unconscious. He and six others were taken to the hospital for treatment.

A young man Monthon Chuyang, also known as Luk Pla, 16, died at the scene. A funeral was held for him on July 4.

His mother Laddawan Hidphao, 46, said: 'Luk Pla had asked for my permission to go to the race with his two friends, but after about 30 minutes, I got a phone call and was informed that they were hit by the motorcycle, so I quickly went to the Trang Hospital.

‘However, I received tragic news of my son's death. His friends were also badly hurt. They had broken arms and legs.'

Trang Police Colonel Cheuchat Yeawdham said the race was held legally, but officers were not immediately notified about the accident.

He said: 'The police will call the victims who weren't seriously injured to testify. We are contacting the organisers to obtain more information.

‘However, the police haven't issued any indictments yet. If we find someone guilty, we are ready to file a case.'

Trang Governor Kajonsak Charoensopha said: 'The municipality officers should provide barriers to ensure the safety of the audience. We have to inspect the racing area if it was properly prepared.'

Meanwhile, Thanompong Leekpai, Trang Deputy Mayor, said authorities are now mulling to find a separate racing track instead of holding the competition at the park.

Trang municipality officers said they have sent staff to check on the injured, and to extend assistance to the bereaved family.
