The coastguard in Newquay rescued a person in distress as thousands flocked to the beach amid a record-breaking heatwave in the UK.

Footage from July 18 shows the rescue team tending to the person who was stretchered off the beach before being transported to Royal Cornwall Hospital.

A major response was initiated for a casualty brought to the beach at Fistral Bay Newquay UK. A junior member of the Newquay Life saving club spotted the person in distress and alerted the RNLI Lifeguard service the Coastguard and Ambulance services.

The incident occurred after the daily 18:00 deadline for official RNLI Lifeguard services to withdraw. The extreme weather has resulted in hundreds of beach and sea users staying on the beach into late evening with only dedicated amateur surf Life savers keeping an unofficial eye on events.

The Cornwall air ambulance was summoned and landed in the grounds of The Headland hotel which overlooks the beach. As the tide was high and the beach crowded with families a beach landing was not possible. After South West ambulance first responders had stabilised the casualty they were transported to Royal Cornwall Hospital by ambulance.
