Pilot gig youngsters all under 16s came from as far as Bristol, Teignmouth and The Isles of Scilly to Newquay harbour to compete in the annual Under 16 Gig championship on Sunday.

The footage filmed on Sunday shows the boats out at sea, battling with the waves as they race for the trophy. Other shots include the traditional boats at the beach and being pushed into the water ahead of the competition.

The 32-foot traditional clinker-built gigs are manned with 6 rowers and a cox. They were originally built for pilotage, harbour duties and lifeboats. The boats are considered very seaworthy even in rough conditions.

Over 80 clubs for pilot gig rowers now exist with even some abroad. In the end, St Marys club from the Isles of Scilly scooped first place with hosts Newquay coming second.
