A flying instructor was killed and his assistant was seriously injured in a light aircraft plane crash in Malaysia on Monday evening.

The pilot Fajim Juffa Mustafa Kamal, 52, was on a night training flight with fellow flying coach Muhammad Din Fikri Zainal Abidin, 62, when their plane crashed on a road in Jalan Dr Nazrin Shah in the city of Ipoh in Perak State on August 1.

Resident Wan, 41, said he saw the plane flying at a low altitude before it allegedly slammed into a lamppost.

He said: 'The plane just crashed, but the weather around was fair.'

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia said the aircraft, a two-seater Piper 28-161 with the registration 9M-BAA, was operated by BATS Aviation Sdn Bhd, which has a flight training centre based at Ipoh airport.

Records showed the aircraft had sent a distress call to their Ipoh tower at 8:07 pm local time after it had taken off from the nearby flying school. Police were notified about the crash three minutes later.

Mior Faridalathrash Wahid, Perak Police Chief, said: 'We received the report at around 08:10 pm. There were two people on the plane.'

Rescue teams were dispatched to evacuate the pair trapped inside the wreckage. Muhammad was pulled out and had sustained severe injuries, but Fajim had died at the scene. Both have been taken to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.

Officers have ruled out bad weather as the cause of the crash.

Mior said: 'They were believed to be in the Piper 28 plane and the weather was fair during the incident. The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) will be conducting an investigation on the cause of the crash.'

The deceased Fajim was a former Malaysian Air Force pilot who entered the private sector in 2018. He had cheated death in 2004 after surviving another plane crash when his MiG-29 fighter jet had engine problems. He left behind his wife and three children.
