Roads flooded in Dulwich just days before a London hosepipe ban

Water flooded roads in Dulwich in south London on Saturday 20 August, just days before a hosepipe ban is due to be imposed in the city.

Repair teams from water company Thames Water and the local council were on the scene to deal with the flooding, which one engineer said was related to an overflowing underground stream after heavy rain this week.

The drought that London and much of the UK has been experiencing has turned the ground hard, reducing the amount of rain it can absorb and causing more runoff into streams and rivers, resulting in some localised flooding.

But some have taken to social media to blame the flooding on leaks from the water network.

Water companies have faced criticism recently for significant leaks from their network, particularly given an impending ban on homeowners using hoses to water their gardens. That ban is due to come into force in London on 24 August.
