Hundreds of fish die after lake dries up due to drought in southern China
Fish died after a lake dried up due to a drought in southern China.
Video filmed in the city of Yueyang in Hunan Province on August 31 shows the dried-up Dongting Lake with dead fish on the cracked surface.
The last drought that affected the Yangtze River was in 1961. The Yangtze flows into Dongting Lake.
A local villager named Mr Liu said to Hunan Television that the water level in Dongting Lake rose in August every year before. But it receded early this year.
According to a local fishery administration employee, the drought has little impact on the birds in the lake, but it affected the nearby villagers' farming and planting.
They use a drone to monitor the lake area. If dead fish are found in the undried ponds, they will salvage and bury them in time to avoid water pollution.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
