Terrified residents poured into the street as a 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook buildings in Mexico City this morning (September 22).

The quake struck near Aguililla in the state of Michoacan, but the powerful tremors were also felt in buildings in the capital.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the "major" earthquake hit at 1.16 am local time this morning. It struck around 20 kilometres below the surface, making it a shallow earthquake.

It comes just days after two people were killed and dozens were injured in a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the same region.

There were no tsunami threats reported.
