Women at the Mahsa Amini rally in London's Trafalgar Square on Saturday (24 September) cut their own hair with scissors in an echo of the same dramatic gesture of protest at Amini protests in Iran.

Some women also attempted to burn bras at the protest, while other protesters tried to light an Iranian flag and even a hijab.

Mahsa Amini died after being detained by Iran’s feared morality police, allegedly for not wearing her hijab correctly and for trousers that were too tight under her outer garments.

Photographs of her body suggest she had been beaten, though Iranian police claim her death was of natural causes.

Her death has sparked protests across Iran and the world.

The protesters in London had diverse backgrounds, united in opposition to the current theocratic government of Iran.

Some were Kurdish, like Mahsa Amini, others liberal, feminist, secular and even royalists, who held up pictures of the last Shah of Iran.

There was also a rainbow LGBTQ flag flying at the rally.
