Onions in Philippines now most expensive in the world

Onions in the Philippines are now the most expensive in the world. The spike in the cost of this vegetable was caused by the super typhoons that battered the country last year.

This footage, which was filmed on January 11, shows a market in Gerona, in the province of Tarlac. There, a kilo of onions costs 400 Philippine Pesos, which corresponds to £6.

CNN reported that onions now cost almost three times more than chicken in the country. Some markets are selling them for 600 Pesos per kg (£9),
but the global average is just £1.27.

"The red onions are too small for their expensive price," says local journalist Sherbien, who has been monitoring the situation in his own country.

On January 10, President Ferdinand Marcos approved the import of 21,060 metric tons of onions to ease the crisis.
