A herd of wild elephants with their babies crawl down a fence to come in and out of a compound in Thailand.

CCTV footage shows the jumbos squeezing under the gap between the wire and dirt ground in Chachoengsao Wildlife Research Station on November 28.

The animals passed through the opening together with juveniles behind them.

One of the park rangers said the elephants ate some of the fruits from trees that grew around their facility.

He said: ‘They come here every time they are hungry because we have many fruit-bearing trees.

‘The cameras set up around the fence caught where they were entering from.'

Thailand has an estimated 2,000 Asian elephants living in the wild where they wander freely among protected forests. Male Asian elephants, unlike African elephants, roam alone once they are over 10 years old while females remain with the herd.

There is sometimes conflict when they come into contact with humans on roads and in villages so wildlife rangers are tasked with monitoring their movements.

A similar number of elephants in the country are also kept in captivity to work in the tourist industry or at religious festivals and weddings. A small number still work in commercial logging.
