Soldiers are giving military training to students and teachers following the horror school shooting incident in Thailand last year.

Lieutenant Colonel Kitipong Manketwit from the 37th Army Division instructed Ban Huai Sai Khao School staff and elementary school pupils in various survival topics in Chiang Rai province on January 7.

The civilians were taught basic first aid, camping, stealth, and shooting survival protocols, among others.

Kitipong said: 'Currently, schools are requesting training since we have experts who are available to teach.

'Interested agencies or organisations such as hospitals or the private sector could contact us since shootings can happen anywhere. If people are trained, deaths can be prevented.'

School director Thanomsri Thanasaksuwan said despite the grim subject, the students enjoyed the brief military workshop.

She said: 'We have to train ourselves to be ready. If an unexpected event occurs, this training is a simulation of the actual situation.

'Everyone has learned something and will be able to put it into practice if the time comes.'

Thai schools have been holding training sessions to prepare for attacks after drug-addled shooter Panya Khamrab, 34, killed 36 people and injured 10 others during a rampage through a nursery in Nong Bua Lamphu province last October 6.

Khamrab, who was dismissed over his methamphetamine addiction, fired a handgun and shotgun in the nursery and stabbed children inside with a machete before continuing the killing spree outside. He then killed his wife and child before shooting himself.

He later turned the gun on himself in the Uthai Sawan district.

The bloody incident is said to be the deadliest mass shooting by a single perpetrator in Thailand's history and regional officials have been taking it upon themselves to hold training sessions to prepare for the rare eventuality.
