Robot assistants have been deployed to guide passengers at the new central railway hub in Bangkok.

The State Railway of Thailand dispatched six 'smart' guides at the Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, also known as the Bang Sue Grand Station, which was formally opened on January 19.

Commuters at the 660-metre-long 5G smart station can interact with the robots via touch screens or voice prompts, with the machines responding in Thai, English, or Chinese.

Equipped with navigation systems, the robots can point lost tourists to various locations, including the ticket counter, the taxi stand, and a food centre.

They can also provide information about train schedules, and are fitted with front and rear cameras to send to first responders in case of emergencies.

The Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal became Bangkok's full-fledged central transit hub after 52 long-distance trains were transferred from the old Hua Lamphong station.

Officials said the building cost the equivalent of 457 million U.S. dollars and has 26 platforms and 274,192 square metres of usable floor space.

State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said 52 long-distance routes are now operating from the station - making it the largest railway terminal in Southeast Asia.

The Hua Lamphong station - one of the main transport hubs in Thailand - closed down after more than 100 years of service.

It once held most railway services in the country and is considered one of South East Asia's most iconic grand central stations.
