Heartwarming footage shows the inspirational moment a disabled woman overcame her fear of heights - to go skydiving.

Vahen King was left unable to walk after being diagnosed with the rare disease Transverse myelitis when she was 23. But she said she wanted to conquer her terror of heights by trying the extreme sport.

Exhilarating video shows Vahen making the brave plunge from the aircraft thousands of feet above the ground with a trained instructor helping her.

Vahen, who is now in her 40s, drifted into the air on a parachute above a wide field before slowly approaching the landing spot and staff running in to take her back into the wheelchair.

Speaking in the video, the first ever Miss Wheelchair Canada said: ‘That was amazing. I want to cry. It's awesome. I feel a little lightheaded.'

When asked about what her favourite part was, she said: ‘Everything.'

Before the dive, Vahen was given a briefing by professionals at the Edmonton Skydive who gave her pointers on what to do.

An instructor was heard saying at the beginning of the video: ‘When I get scared, I'm gonna pull the parachute. When the ground looks big, I'm going to pull the parachute. We're gonna have some fun under these parachutes.'

Vahen has become an inspiration for people with disabilities after she began travelling the world to do the things she had always dreamed of.

In December last year, Vahen flew on a parasail over a beach in Thailand.

The beauty queen added: 'I used to be overwhelmed with fear and insecurities. I definitely would not consider myself courageous, especially at age 23, when I lost my health and independence to a random virus, called Transverse Myelitis.

'Doctors said I'll never walk again, or be independent. I was now a person with a disability and had no idea how I was going to cope. And I didn't cope well for a long time.

'I let my fear control me, and kept believing the lie, I'll never amount to anything. I'm not enough. My guess is that many people are being held back by fear insecurities and the challenges of life, letting it control you.

But it's time to take back control and allow your fear to fuel your courage not your self-doubt. And why I keep choosing courage is first of all, because it's the best way to thrive in life, but also in doing so, I am helping others face their fear and do the same like I did on this day when I went skydiving with Edmonton Skydive to raise money for the Adeara Recovery Centre.

'Courage isn't the absence of fear, courage is fear in submission.'
