A sarus crane has been confiscated from a man in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, who nursed the bird back to health from injury.

State officials have moved the rare bird from Mohammad Arif's home to a wildlife sanctuary.

Under Indian law, it is illegal for individuals to keep sarus cranes or even feed them. They are recognised as the official state bird.

Arif had found the bird with a broken leg nearby his home and took it upon himself to nurse it back to health.

The Amethi local claims the bird was free to fly away at any time but it never did.

Footage from March 9 shows Arif feeding the bird at his residence.
