Burmese soldiers and anti-junta rebels fought along the Thai-Myanmar border and injured a Thai local on Saturday.

At least 300 armed members of the Karen National Liberation Army and the People's Defence Force clashed with military troops while attacking military bases opposite Mae Sot district in Tak province on March 25. The fight lasted more than three hours.

Residents said they saw smoke near the scene of the conflict, some 10 kilometres away from the Mae Sot border, as buildings in the Myawaddy industrial zone were set ablaze.

Burmese soldiers launched air strikes forcing resistance troops to retreat.

Local media reported that 'several' Burmese officers and one Karen soldier were killed.

A Thai driver was also hit by shrapnel while staying at a parking lot in the Myawaddy industrial zone. He was taken to the Mae Sot General Hospital for treatment.

Other workers in the car park were evacuated as bullets and shrapnel pelted the area during the attack.

The Myawaddy-Mae Sot Friendship Bridge No. 1 was temporarily closed due to the fighting, but was later re-opened after an hour.

Thai authorities said they have ramped up security measures at the border by deploying personnel to keep tourists and residents safe.

Fighting between the armed militias and the Burmese military has intensified amid the political turmoil in Myanmar caused by the ousting of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

Several months of protests erupted across Myanmar, also known as Burma, but hundreds of civilians were killed amid forceful crackdowns. The army has since regained control through ongoing intimidation and arrests but the country remains divided and rebel groups clash regularly with state soldiers.
