A raging storm battered buildings as Thailand enters the rainy monsoon season.

Video shows sheets of rain and strong winds whipping through the Mae Sariang district office in Mae Hong Son province on May 14.

The squall also struck a university, tearing off roof tiles and knocking down small trees and electric posts.

Local media reported that the storm had been lashing the province since May 13. At least 232 residents from 66 households were affected.

The Thai Meteorological Department forecasted that northern Thailand, including Mae Hong Son province, would experience hot to very hot weather with haze during the day, while scattered thundershowers with gusty winds were expected in the afternoon.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
