A man who films sea creatures has shared incredible footage of a smack of jellyfish – showing thousands swimming through clear blue waters.

David Phan, took the video on Shelly Beach, Sydney, while free diving.

The ocean photographer regularly shares his impressive clips with his 21,000 followers on Instagram (@dave_dives), where he recently uploaded this latest video.

The blue blubber jellyfish fill the beaches of Sydney every year for several days, usually occurring between October and March.

“I free-dove under this swarm without realising how large it was and ran out of air after a minute and had to resurface right through the middle of them,” David, from Bondi, Australia, said.

“Fortunately their sting isn’t that painful but I got stung around 30 times that day filming them.

“I had completely underestimated how large this swarm was – there were easily thousands and even underwater tornados of them!

“I was overwhelmed at how many there were – I saw them last year but there wasn’t anywhere near the number I saw this year!”

David filmed the footage on 21 March 2023 and later shared it online, where it has racked up nearly 10,000 views.

One user quoted: “I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine,” referencing "Finding Nemo".

Someone else said: “So many mate! Such a cool video.”

Sydney said: “Great footage.”

Nana added: “Wow, spectacular!!”

“So gorgeous!!!,” wrote Evelyn.

“Gosh so many!,” said someone else.

David visits Shelly Beach, Cabbage Tree Bay, and plenty of other beaches around Sydney throughout the year, and loves filming whatever he can.

He added: “I will definitely be filming them when they are back next year!

“Ocean life is underrated in Sydney and often public policies are made out of voter popularity rather than facts e.g. shark nets.

“I hope that more policies are passed which will help to protect the amazing ocean life of Sydney!”
