16 years old and still going strong: Evelyn Maersk arriving Felixstowe, at around 6am on Monday, 29 May 2023.
One of the first generation of ulltra large container ships, the 397 metre long Evelyn Maersk was originally planned to carry 11,000 TEU of containers - but this capacity is now up at 15,500 TEU.
She was launched 30 Jan, 2007; can carry 15,500 TEU; has a Gross Tonnage of 170,794 Tons;
LOA 397m; beam 56m; current draught 14.7 meters.
Current designs of 400 metre long ships are much boxier, without the beautiful bow and stern shapes of these vessels, and have more beam - 61 metres or more. The more modern standard also includes separate island superstructures for the bridge and accomodation block, and for the funnel and engine area, which enable higher stacking of boxes aft of the bridge, not obstructing forward views. Modern vessels can carry over 24,000 TEU of containers in the same length hull.
This video was filmed by me, Chris Gosling, on a Panasonic HC-770 HD camcorder.
More footage of this and other ships are available.
