This is the dramatic moment a truck swerved off a slippery road while dodging a fallen motorcycle in Thailand.

The Isuzu truck was transporting concrete beams along Highway 349 in Chonburi province when it encountered the female motorcycle rider, who had slipped on the wet road on June 20.

Quick-thinking driver Marut Suaydee, 35, steered the large vehicle off the road as there was not enough time to slow his truck down. He swerved onto an empty lot, spilling some of his cargo in the area.

Banbung District police officers arrived at the scene after receiving a report at 6:30 pm.

The truck had spun onto an empty lot by the roadside and had nearly struck an electric post, while some of the beams it was carrying were strewn about after slipping from the trailer.

Both Marut and the female motorcycle rider suffered minor injuries and were given first aid.

Resident Nattawat said: 'I saw the rider skid out of control on the road, so I signalled for the other cars to slow down while I helped her. The truck driver tried to brake, but he was already too near. He swerved to the side of the road instead.

'This is not an isolated occurrence. This road becomes very slippery when it rains. I hope the authorities decide to resurface it to prevent future accidents.'

Yupharat Chonwatphu, the sister of the female motorbiker, said: 'My sister was riding home from school when it started raining. She slipped on the road, and the other drivers and residents assisted her. I'm relieved she wasn't terribly hurt.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools, cheap loans for cars, notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws as well as endemic corruption and chronic under-investment in infrastructure hamper the efforts.
