Climate activists bring 'dirty oil tanker' and burning oil drum to first day of UN shipping negotiations in London

Climate change campaigners Ocean Rebellion protested outside the United Nations shipping body in Vauxhall, London, on the first day of negotiations focusing on reducing carbon emissions (June 26).

Bemused faces appeared at the International Maritime Organization windows where a mock oil tanker belching out thick black smoke, and an oil drum shooting out flames were raised up on a pole, as delegates enjoyed an evening drinks reception inside.

The activists urge the group representing around 180 countries to halve shipping carbon emissions by 2030.

Research has suggested a third to a half of emissions can be cut by using experimental fuels and making vessels run more efficiently.

The discussions run ahead of the UN Marine Environment Protection Committee 80 (MEPC) in July.
