A doting son handcrafted a queen-themed dress for his mum's religious pageant.

Patrick Permejo, 23, said he was proud of his mother Elsie, 46, when she was chosen to play Queen Helena at the Santacruzan in Batangas province, the Philippines.

But when the mum-of-two almost refused because she didn't want to shell out a budget for a new dress, Patrick taught himself how to sew and made a fabulous gown for her mother.

Footage shows Patrick glueing the sequins and beads to her mother's crown. He also made the float and matching clothes for himself, his father, and his 12-year-old brother.

He said: 'She told us that she would just wear a simple dress to save money. But I wanted the event to be special for her.'

Patrick bought a second-hand skirt and used it as a base for the dress. He learned the process by asking friends and googling how-to videos.

He said: ‘We went to the parade as a family. I am so proud of the outcome. Everyone helped me. It made mum so happy.'

Santacruzan is a Filipino religious-historical pageant held in many cities throughout the Philippines.

One of the most colourful aspects of this festival is the pageant depicting the finding of the True Cross by Queen Helena, mother of Constantine the Great.
