Two big monitor lizards wrestled each other in a fight over territory at a pond.

Footage shows the reptiles with their limbs tightly around their opponent in a bid to tackle them down in Pathum Thani province, Thailand on May 25.

But the creatures floated around the water, looking like a pair in heat for the mating season.

Onlooker Danuphat Rattanathaisakul said he was confused about what the animals were doing.

He said: ‘They looked like they wanted to drown each other but at the same time kept close like they never wanted to part. It was an unusual thing to watch.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
