STORYLINE:
China's economic performance in the first half (H1) of 2023 showed signs of recovery in the face of various challenges, according to guest speakers at the China Economic Roundtable hosted by Xinhua.
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed Monday that China's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 5.5 percent year on year in the first half of this year.
The NBS spokesperson Fu Linghui said the economic growth had significantly accelerated compared with that of last year, which is quite remarkable given the global economic fluctuations and downturns.
He said, in the January-June period, the production supply of agriculture and industry continued to increase, the service industry and consumption grew rapidly, and high-quality development made steady progress.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): FU LINGHUI, NBS spokesperson
"Policies on stabilizing growth, employment and prices have shown effect. Generally speaking, in the first half of this year, the economic recovery performed well. In the meantime, the quality of development is steadily improving."
President of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics Liu Yuanchun said that China's H1 economic performance undoubtedly represents an example of high-speed growth among major economies, despite adverse effects resulting from global changes.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LIU YUANCHUN, President of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics
"We should see China's economic recovery from an overall perspective, and from the global perspective and the historical perspective, particularly taking the global pandemic and global changes into consideration. In that way, we can better understand China's economic achievements in the first half of this year and the root causes of the problems facing us."
