Muslim community members prepare a traditional Tazia ahead of Muharram procession in Beawar city of Rajasthan state in India.

Tazia is a replica of the mausoleum of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year. Since the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar.

Muslims commemorate Muharram as a month of mourning in remembrance of the Martyrdom Islamic Prophet Muhammad's grandson Imam Hussain, who was killed on Ashura (10th day of Muharram) in the battle of Karbala in 680 A.D.

Tazia processions have traditionally walked through streets of a town, with mourning, flagellation and wailing, ultimately to a local lake or well where all the Tazia would be immersed into water.

Mohammad Harun Chhipa, the artisan who makes tazia, told that he making tazia for the last 20-25 years. One Tazia prepared with bamboo, rattan, colorful papers and artificial decorative items in about 20 days. A Tajiya is made in three parts, which are called Takhat, Roza and Gumbaz.
