A curious wild elephant checked out cars on a mountain road in Thailand.

Footage shows the jumbo walking on the edge of the road as it approached a pickup truck in Prachuap Khiri Khan province on June 16.

It tried to catch up with the vehicle as it steered away but without success before moving along to the next driver.

Driver Sasitorn said: ‘It was like being in a checkpoint. I'm a local but still not used to it.'

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
