This is the scary moment a massive wild elephant held up a pickup truck to collect food from the passengers.

Footage shows the jumbo waiting on the edge of the road and slowly walking to the middle to stop the vehicle like a traffic officer in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, Thailand, on June 2.

It towered over the tourists, who were then on their way home and rummaged through their baskets to take their fruit.

The animal then found a jackfruit and put them in its mouth before it allowed the car to leave safely after they had paid the 'toll'.

Passengers inside the pickup truck at the time said they tried to stay calm to avoid startling the jumbo - advice given publicly by conservationists who monitor the movements of the animals.

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
