Spectacular footage captured the moment a lightning storm raged directly underneath the Northern Lights for more than four hours.

Tristan Wingert was out taking storms photos in Saskatchewan, Canada, on July 26 when he set up his camera for a timelapse.

Amazing footage – which has been viewed more than 2.4million times – clearly shows the lightning bolts crackling behind clouds while the Aurora Borealis put on a show higher in the sky.

The Northern Lights continued for longer than four hours as its green streaks lit up the otherwise pitch black night.

Tristan, 27, said: “It made me emotional to capture such a phenomenal display of nature.

“I’ve seen the Northern Lights on countless occasions and some pretty good lightning storms as well.

“However, I’ve never seen them where they are both visible at the same time. The fact that they were both so active was crazy.

“ I went out to take lightning photos not realising the Northern Lights was clear above the storm system.

“On the horizon there was a very active lightning storm that was moving away from me.

“Above the clouds you can see the Northern Lights dancing in the sky, as well as the stars and satellites moving past.”
