Police search dogs successfully tracked down a toddler who went missing from his family's house in northern Thailand.

The two-year-old named Copter was taken by his parents to stay at his grandmother's home in the middle of an eight-acre longan plantation in Chiang Mai province on September 3.

He had been staying for two days at the house in the Mae Fak sub-district when the elderly woman reported him missing to the police on September 5 afternoon.

Upon receiving the report, police officers and volunteer rescuers combed through a 5km radius from the family's home at around 2:30 pm. Divers also plunged into a pond, but still found no trace of Copter.

At 4:30 pm, the 33rd Border Patrol Police arrived with K-9 dogs to assist in the search. The canines tracked down Copter's scent and led officers to a small hut around a mile away from his house.

Police found Copter sitting inside, frightened but unharmed. The frantic family cried tears of relief upon being reunited with him.

Copter has been taken to the Sansai Hospital for a medical check.

His grandma told officers that she had ventured out to work in the plantation, believing the boy to be asleep in the kitchen. When she came home at around noon to have lunch, she called out to him but received no reply.

She said she scoured the house and its vicinity, but still could not find the missing child, prompting her to call for help.

Meanwhile, police said they were investigating if Copter had been abducted.
