A male giraffe was moved to a 'romantic' new home for a breeding programme at a zoo in Thailand.

The six-year-old bull named Wang was relocated from the Khon Kaen Zoo to its new 'love nest' at the Chiang Mai Zoo on September 2.

Officials are now hoping he will mate with the lone female and produce offspring.

Khon Kaen Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoy said: 'The Khon Kaen Zoo has three male and two female giraffes, while the Chiang Mai Zoo only has one female.

'Wang was transferred to breed with it as giraffes are rare wild animals. We want them to reproduce so their population increases. The project is a collaboration under the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand.'

The zoo chief added that Wang has already arrived at his 'honeymoon destination' safely. Zookeepers are now observing if the pair will breed.

Wang was born on August 1, 2017, and was described as having a friendly disposition that made him popular with zoo visitors, especially children.

Giraffes are designated 'vulnerable' under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Its population is decreasing due to habitat loss, illegal hunting, and ecological changes, the IUCN said.
