Firemen battle fire engulfing floating market in Pattaya, Thailand
A huge fire ripped through a busy floating market in Thailand, sending locals jumping into the water to escape the flames.
The raging inferno engulfed stalls and huts, leaving only their charred frames at the popular Pattaya Floating Market in Chonburi province at around 7:30 pm on September 7.
Vendors closing up shop at the time battled to salvage what they could of their merchandise before plunging into the surrounding canals to escape the advancing flames.
Authorities said 20 firetrucks were dispatched to contain the blaze, which was still burning in the early hours of the morning.
Intermittent explosions were heard as the fire, fanned by a gusty storm, ate through buildings made mainly out of wood, bamboo, and nipa leaves.
Firefighters said they had brought the fire under control 11 pm local time.
One person suffered burns on their feet but declined to go to the hospital. There were no deaths or serious injuries reported.
Officials said the fire had caused an estimated 50 million baht in damages after tearing through around 0.39 acres of the 7.5-acre market.
Pattaya City Mayor Poramese Ngampiches visited the scene to oversee investigations with senior fire officials.
The cause of the fire is still unclear.
The Pattaya Floating Market, also called the 'Four Regions Market', is a riverside tourist attraction in Pattaya, Chonburi province. Its floating pavillions showcase the architectural styles of the different regions in Thailand.
