Joseph W. Polisi, president emeritus and chief China officer at the Juilliard School, a renowned performing arts conservatory in the United States, was awarded the Lifetime Honorary Award at the inaugural Orchid Awards ceremony held in Beijing on Friday.

The Orchid Awards honor foreign friends who have promoted humanity's shared values, and facilitated cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world and mutual learning among global civilizations.

SOUNDBITE (English): JOSEPH W. POLISI, President emeritus and chief China officer at Juilliard School
"I'm greatly honored to be given this award. I've, in many ways, spent a good deal of my life involved in the study of China, and certainly in seeing the great growth of Western art and music in China and the extraordinary young artists and more senior artists who are now functioning in China.
It was Leonard Bernstein, the famous conductor and composer who said that music will not stop wars, but music will make people understand each other better.
And I think that's the level that we have to work on. Individual people-to-people exchange, in which we try to take the time to listen to each other, to respect each other's opinions, to understand the empathy that's involved in all of us on this globe, that we share many values. And instead of dwelling on the negative, let's dwell on the positive.
And so we are now seeing an increase in the number of applications, and actually currently, in the number of enrolled students from outside of China. It really creates a very interesting mix and interchange, a cultural interchange."
