A hapless woman miraculously survived being hit on the head by falling concrete from a 40-year-old building in the Philippines.

Aida Bajet, 58, was walking in front of a convenience store when large chunks of concrete crumbled from the two-storey building in Quezon City, Manila, on September 17.

CCTV footage shows the local in a blue shirt and orange pants passing through the crowded sidewalk when the concrete slab fell and knocked her down onto the pavement.

Shocked onlookers ran over to help Aida, and called an ambulance to rush her to the hospital.

The injured woman was discharged after receiving stitches on her head and right foot. She also had numerous bruises on her shoulders and back.

Speaking to local media, Aida said: 'I was going to our canteen at the market when it happened. There were so many people there, but the concrete struck me. I'm just thankful that I survived. I thought that was the end of me.'

Local officials said the accident may have been caused by the building's age as it had been built in the 1980s.

Jelly Santos, public safety officer of Novaliches Proper village where the incident occurred, said: 'From time to time, we warn people passing the area to be careful because the building has falling debris sometimes.'

The management of the convenience store has shouldered Aida's medical expenses.

Authorities have temporarily closed the store and cordoned off the sidewalk to conduct repairs.
