This is the heart-stopping moment a woman ran to escape an out-of-control ambulance crashing into her in Thailand.

Jane Muttana, 36, had been buying noodles at a roadside food cart in Lamphun province when the speeding vehicle barreled onto the street on September 30.

Footage shows the terrified local sprinting away as the ambulance dragged the noodle stall and left a trail of debris on the tarmac.

A shaken Jane said: 'I was waiting for the vendor to prepare my meal when I heard a crash. I turned and saw that the ambulance had collided with a post on the roadside and was heading towards us. The vendor stepped away just as it crashed into the shop.'

Local authorities were investigating the driver, who was believed to have been drink driving.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
