Powerful Earthquake Hits Herat, Afghanistan

The 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan that shook the west of the country last Saturday left more than 2,000 dead and 9,000 injured. This is according to the latest reports from the Afghan disaster management agency.

According to information released by the entity, the earthquake left at least 2,060 dead and 9,240 injured. In addition, some 1,300 houses were destroyed in Herat province. However, these figures could rise in the coming hours.

The spokesperson for the Afghan Red Crescent, Irfanullah Sharafzoy, explained that the 12 villages in the Zinda Jan district, the epicenter of the tremors, were “completely destroyed.” Faced with the disaster, the Red Crescent carries out searches for survivors under rubble.
