A Russian tourist has died in a fall from a hotel on a Thai island.

Vitalii Rudenko, 25, had reportedly left his room in the middle of the night to climb up the fire escape to the rooftop of the eight-storey Utopia Central condominium in Phuket.

CCTV footage showed that he failed to return to his room, with shocked locals later finding his bloodied corpse lying near the ground floor car park early in the morning on October 18.

Police Captain Channarong Prakongkua of the Kathu District Police Station said officers received a report about the incident at 5:10 am. They went to investigate the scene, where the Russian man in a white shirt and grey boxers was splayed on the pavement.

Investigators said he had cracked open the back of his skull and had a broken left arm and right hip. They said there was no indication that he was assaulted.

Police Captain Channarong said: 'We believe the dead tourist may have either intentionally jumped from the rooftop or accidentally fell. There were no signs of ransacking in his room, and it did not appear that he was attacked.'

Vitalii's body was taken to the Vachira Phuket Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of his death. Officers said he will also be tested for drug use.

Police were also coordinating with the Russian Embassy to notify his family and make arrangements for repatriation.

On October 6, Chinese tourist named Zou Ke, 34, fell to her death from a five-star hotel also on Phuket. She had been with her ex-boyfriend, who claimed the woman had thrown herself from the hotel room's 10th floor balcony.
