This is the heartwarming moment a passer-by rescued a sparrow tangled in an electricity power box.

Somkuan Jakha was driving through a village near his home when he noticed a swarm of birds flapping around the power box in Rayong province, Thailand, on October 22.

He parked his car to inspect the object and found the hapless bird hanging by its neck from a string it had been using to make a nest.

Somkuan and his friend untangled the noose to free the sparrow, which was visibly weakened but alive. They left the bird on a nearby table to allow it to recover.

He said: 'We left the bird in the care of a park ranger. It was very weak and exhausted, but hopefully it survives.'

Thailand, a largely Buddhist nation, believes that kindness towards animals should be encouraged, with temples sometimes being a safe refuge for stray cats, dogs, and even monkeys that don't have homes.

There are two main species of sparrows found in Thailand - the Eurasian tree sparrow and the house sparrow. Their population is declining in many parts of the world.
