On foot, by bicycle and even on donkey cart, residents of war-ruined North Gaza continued their exodus south on Wednesday 22 November.

Israel has long told people to flee the north of the Gaza Strip, promising relative safety in the south, even as it carries out some air strikes there too.

The human flood came amid hopes for a temporary ceasefire and exchange of prisoners -- 50 women and children hostages held by Hamas in return for 150 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli jails.

Qatar, a mediator of hostages negotiations, announced success in talks involving Egypt and the US over a four-day truce, starting on Thursday, during which the hostages and prisoners will be released.

During the truce period, vastly more aid will be allowed to enter the Gaza Strip than Israel has permitted so far.
