On Thursday, December 7th, a significant number of dead sardines, mackerel, and other fish blanketed a one-kilometer stretch of coastline near the Toi Fishing Port in Hamacho, Hakodate City, Hokkaido.

Local fishermen said that this is the first time they're seeing this much dead fish wash ashore.

In response to this unprecedented phenomenon, both the city and prefectural governments have launched investigations to pinpoint the exact cause and are actively developing plans for the proper disposal of the dead fish.
