STORYLINE:

The World Media Summit (WMS) is conducive to deepening exchanges and cooperation among media outlets, said Ali Hassan, chairman and editor-in-chief of Egypt's official Middle East News Agency (MENA).

Hassan attended the 5th WMS held on Dec. 2-8 in the Chinese cities of Guangzhou and Kunming, which gathered over 450 participants from 101 countries and regions, including representatives of 197 mainstream media outlets, think tanks, government agencies, diplomatic missions, as well as UN agencies and international organizations.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): ALI HASSAN, Chairman and editor-in-chief of Middle East News Agency
"I'm honored to participate in the World Media Summit. There were many media leaders representing various countries. This summit is an opportunity to make acquaintances with major and influential media figures around the world.
We discussed the importance of obtaining information from credible news agencies around the world and the possibility of using modern technologies that develop the performance of news agencies.
Friendly consultations took place among many heads of participating news agencies. We verbally agreed that each country would obtain its information about the other country through each one's news agency."

Hassan said that the summit underlined the necessity of "credibility in media coverage" to address the global challenges, unlike the misleading coverage done by some Western media.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): ALI HASSAN, Chairman and editor-in-chief of Middle East News Agency
"Most Western news agencies and the American media are biased in their coverage of many issues, and the best example of this is their coverage of the Palestinian issue.
The media must publish all studies and research on global food security, climate change, and other similar issues to raise awareness of public opinion in our countries and present these issues to decision-makers."
