Officials are conducting several rescue operations from boats in southern India's Tamil Nadu after heavy rainfall flooded the entire state.

The incident took place in Thoothukudi district on December 18.

Visuals show the NDRF team creating a temporary bridge across an inundated road for the rescue operation. A man is seen crossing the bridge with great difficulty.

In another visual, officials are seen rescuing civilians on a boat in a flooded location.

Tamil Nadu is currently facing extreme weather conditions marked by continuous heavy rainfall that is impacting the southern districts. Areas such as Palayamkottai and Kanyakumari have been especially hard-hit, resulting in significant disruptions and the need for evacuation efforts. In response to the inclement weather, schools in four districts, including Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar, have been closed. The state government has declared a holiday for educational institutions, banks, and other private entities in the most affected regions.

The persistent rains have led to the filling of 40 lakes to their capacity in the Kovilpatti area of Thoothukudi district, raising concerns about potential breaches. To assist those displaced by the floods, relief camps have been set up to provide shelter and essential services.

The Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management in Tamil Nadu has assured that precautionary measures are in place, including the deployment of State Disaster Response Forces and National Disaster Response Force teams to ensure public safety. Additionally, the Meteorological Department has issued warnings for cyclonic winds in coastal areas, posing additional challenges for residents and authorities alike.
