Motorists and pedestrians narrowly avoided injury when two manhole covers in the street suddenly blew up in a fiery explosion.

CCTV cameras captured the incident on a busy road in Shantou, in Guangdong Province, southern China, on the night of December 15.

Dozens of cars and motorbikes were moving along the street when flames suddenly erupted on the roadside.

Two manhole covers were blown off, leading nearby pedestrians and vehicles to quickly take cover.

From the video, it can be seen that the explosion surged from beneath the manhole covers.

Witnesses stated that the scene was shocking, with tall flames soaring into the sky.

Incredibly, no pedestrians or vehicles were passing by the explosion at the time and no one got injured.

A local merchant, who was not identified, told local media that the blast happened not far from his location.

He said: 'I haven't heard of anyone getting hurt, and the road there is still open.'

Nearby residents said they suspect the blast might have been caused by explosive methane gas, which is commonly found in sewers.

Another man, also not named, told local media that when he passed by the incident site the next morning, he saw that the manhole covers had already been replaced, and the road was open for traffic.

Officials confirmed there have been no reports of injuries or any damages.

The incident is under investigation.
