The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a pet dog that tumbled down a cliff along the coast of Oregon on New Year's Day.

The aircrew from Astoria flew a helicopter to hoist the pooch that had fallen at the Ecola State Park on January 1 afternoon.

A rescue swimmer was deployed to move the dog into the hoisting basket.

Footage shows the responder picking up the canine huddled next to the craggy cliff before placing it in the basket to be lifted up to the helicopter.

The rescue aircraft landed at 4:15 pm local time in a parking lot, where the dog and its owner were reunited.

The unnamed pet owner told the Coast Guard: 'Leo stayed overnight at an emergency vet. He has a few cuts and bruises. All things considered, he is doing good. We are so thankful he is alive and expected to recover.'

The Cannon Beach Rural Fire Department said: 'We'd like to remind everyone to keep dogs on leash when hiking unless otherwise stated ‘Dogs Allowed Off Leash' on the state park website.'
