STORYLINE:

Boasting a history of over 5,000 years, the painted pottery twin pot housed in the Henan Museum in central China is a national first-class cultural relic.

Unearthed at the Dahe Village Ruins in 1972 in central China's Henan Province, the artifact is identified as a drinking vessel in the Yangshao Culture period.

The Yangshao Culture, dating back 5,000 to 7,000 years, was a Neolithic culture that originated along the middle reaches of the Yellow River.

The pottery had been broken into pieces when it was unearthed. After being repaired by technicians, the pot impressed the world with its unique design.

The 20-cm-tall artifact is composed of two olive-shaped pot bodies with flat bottoms, wide bellies, and narrow mouths. It was made from muddy red pottery and was painted with black lines.

There is a round hole on the belly part connecting the two pot bodies. This design makes it difficult for one to drink with the pot alone, requiring two people to simultaneously spill liquids out or drink together.

As a symbol of peace, friendship, and mutual respect, the twin pot is believed to be used in sacred ritual ceremonies for major events, such as tribe alliance ceremonies or wedding ceremonies.
