In a heartwarming tradition, the 30th Christmas tree from the Schonbrunn Palace Culture & Christmas Market has been handed over to the Schonbrunn Zoo, bringing joy to its elephant residents. Originating from the Salzkammergut and generously provided by the Austrian Federal Forests (OBf), the 18-meter-high spruce tree was expertly felled and dismantled, making its journey to the zoo.

At 9:30 a.m., the elephants eagerly welcomed the green branches, offering a delightful change for the African elephants. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck, the zoo director, emphasized the importance of providing varied activities for the animals, stating that the annual Schonbrunn Christmas tree has become a cherished and enduring tradition. Over the coming days, visitors can observe the elephants skillfully exploring and dismantling the tree, showcasing their incredible trunks with around 40,000 muscles.

Andreas Gruber, board member of Bundesforste, expressed satisfaction with the sustainable use of the tree, emphasizing the continuation of this long-standing tradition. The Christmas tree's journey from festive centerpiece to enriching elephant activity exemplifies a thoughtful and sustainable approach to post-holiday repurposing. Christmas market organizer MTS Vienna has been leading this eco-friendly initiative since 2008, contributing to the well-being and enrichment of the animals at Schonbrunn Zoo.
